How to Choose Earphones: TWS, Wired, Neckband or Headphones

How to decide between TWS earbuds, wired earphones and headphones, and how to read the specifications on the box, without any model or price claims.

How this guide was prepared. This is a general buying guide. It makes no claims about any specific model, price or availability, so nothing in it depends on a launch or a sale. We have not tested earphones for it. It explains how specifications are normally stated and what they do and do not tell you, using widely documented standards such as IP ratings.

Start with how you will use them

Decide the main job first: commuting, workouts, calls, gaming, study, or long listening at a desk. Most specifications matter for one of these jobs and not the others, so a list of features is only useful once you know which ones you need.

TWS, wired, neckband or headphones

TypeGood atWatch for
TWS earbudsPortability and freedom from cablesSmall batteries, so the case matters. Easy to lose, and the battery wears out over the years.
Wired earphonesNo charging, no wireless delay, usually cheapNeeds a matching connector (3.5 mm or USB-C) and the cable can wear out.
Neckband earphonesA large battery in a band, and harder to loseA band that some people find uncomfortable.
On-ear headphonesLight and portablePads press on the ears and can tire some people.
Over-ear headphonesComfort and isolation over long sessionsBulkier, and warmer in summer.
Gaming headsetsA boom mic for voice chatUsually wired, and less portable.

Noise cancellation: what the claims mean

Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and electronics to cancel sound. Hybrid ANC uses microphones both outside and inside the earbud or cup. It works best on steady, low-pitched noise such as engines, fans and air conditioners, and does much less against voices and sudden sounds.

  • A higher dB claim is not a guarantee of better cancellation, because brands measure it differently.
  • Passive isolation, the physical seal of ear tips or ear cups, is separate from ANC and helps with higher-pitched sound.
  • ANC shortens battery life, and the ANC-on figure is the one that matters if you use it all the time.
  • A poor ear-tip fit weakens ANC. Try the other sizes in the box.

Bluetooth versions and codecs

The Bluetooth version affects range, stability and features such as multipoint, which keeps two devices connected at once. The codec decides how audio is compressed. SBC is universal and AAC is common, and higher-quality codecs only work if both the phone and the earbuds support them. A newer Bluetooth version does not by itself mean better sound.

Water and dust ratings

RatingWhat it says
IPX4Splash resistant. The X means dust protection is not rated.
IPX5Water-jet resistant. Dust protection is not rated.
IP54Dust protected, and splash resistant.
IP55Dust protected, and water-jet resistant.

None of these means you can swim with them. Check whether the rating covers the case as well as the earbuds, since the case is often rated lower.

Reading battery figures

  • Per charge versus total. Per-charge time is one listening session. Total includes the case, which recharges the earbuds several times.
  • Test conditions. Brands usually quote the figure at about half volume with ANC off. Expect less with ANC on or at higher volume.
  • Fast charge. A '10 minutes for several hours' claim is useful in a hurry but is also a claim.
  • Battery ageing. Small batteries lose capacity over time, so a long rating helps later too.

Microphones and calls

The number of microphones does not tell you how clear you sound, because noise reduction software matters as much. Independent recordings are the best evidence, and they are rare for budget earbuds. A boom mic on a headset usually picks up your voice more clearly than a mic in an ear cup.

Latency and gaming

Wireless audio is delayed slightly. A low-latency or gaming mode reduces the delay, and a figure around 40 to 60 ms is usually described as suitable for casual games. Wired headsets have no wireless delay. A gaming headset is defined by its boom mic, not by a mode on a Bluetooth headphone.

Wired earphones: connectors

Check the port on your phone. A 3.5 mm earphone fits a headphone jack. A USB-C earphone fits a USB-C port, but not every device supports USB-C audio. A 3.5 mm earphone on a USB-C-only phone needs an adapter, and some adapters do not work on every phone. Confirm before you buy.

Warranty, seller and returns

  • Confirm the warranty term and who provides service in India, since listings can differ.
  • Buy from a seller with a clear return window. Fit and comfort are personal, and you cannot judge them from a specification.
  • Check that the listing is the exact model you intend to buy, as look-alike names are common.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions about this topic.

Choose wired for the lowest price, no charging and no wireless delay, and TWS for freedom from cables. Check your phone's port first, because a wired earphone must match it.

Not categorically. Headphones usually have larger batteries and can be more comfortable for long sessions, while earbuds are smaller and easier to carry. Decide by how and where you will use them.

It helps most if you commute on noisy transport or work near steady noise such as fans. It does less against voices, and it shortens battery life, so decide whether you will use it.

It means the product resists water jets. The X means dust protection is not rated. IP55 adds dust protection. None of these means you can swim with them.

Most people do not. SBC and AAC work with nearly every phone. Higher-quality codecs only help if both your phone and the earbuds support them.
